Whonnock is a remarkable community on the north side of the Fraser River in the eastern portion of the city of Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Whonnock boasts a great location with Downtown Vancouver only 56 kilometers west on the Lougheed Highway. Other nearby communities are Whonnock Creek to the east, Kanaka Creek and Albion to the west, the south Fraser River to the south, and the municipal border to the north. The name “Whonnock” is from the Halkomelem, a language of various First Nation people in the area, for humpback salmon, the only kind found in Whonnock Creek. The creek flows from above Dewdney Trunk Road, down to the Fraser River past Whonnock Lake. First Nation people lived in this area continuously for more than 10,000 years. Settlers began arriving in 1861.
Today many people in Whonnock keep livestock such as sheep, goats, horses, llamas, and poultry. Some locals have small tree and fruit farms. In 1988 The Whonnock Lake Center and Whonnock Lake Park were opened. The center serves primarily as a community hall for Whonnock residents. Whonnock Lake is the central feature of Whonnock Lake Park which offers a playground, small sandy beach, swimming, recreational fishing in a stocked lake, hiking, nature study, and mature trees with a grassy playground. The park is teeming with flora and fauna. Native plants, muskrat, beaver, loons, mallard ducks, and other small birds can all be observed. Students in Whonnock attend schools in School District 42 Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. Whonnock has a large artisan community featuring spinners, potters, candlemakers, leather craft workers, and weavers. In 1974, The Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Guild was formed. The guild encourages a renewed interest in the long-standing crafts of weaving and spinning.
